It was the day before Christmas Eve 2016. I purposely was delaying ham roasting for the next day. Instead of ham, I made beef bourguigno for dinner. I didn’t have any red wines from Burgundy but I found a bottle of GG (groβes gewächse) Spätburgunder from “Christmas present” arrived from wineshop in Germany just day before. The wine is from Württenberg in South Germany where vintage 2012 should be good for reds especially for Spätburgunder.
This wine should pair well with beef bourguigno and it paired! Very well indeed.
In the glass the aromas of wine showed immediately that the wine is oaked and rich. Lack of light red berries as in basic Pinot from colder regions. Red berries can be found on the palate but dark fruits as well. Medium body and magnificent finish leaves a harmonic experience.
No wonder that Spätburgunders, especially GG quality are very popular and not easy to get, at least in wineshop from where this was purchased.
